MRM Art Classes

My Reflection Matters (MRM), LLC offers learning experiences for home or unschoolers that intentionally center the cultural attributes, traditions, and histories of Black and Brown communities. Classes are taught primarily by teachers of color in order to promote our mission in offering opportunities for youth to see themselves in positions of leadership. MRM believes when children see themselves represented positively in their daily learning experiences, this strengthens their sense of self and pride in who they are. MRM also believes when children are provided opportunities to learn about people and cultures that differ from their own, they are able to develop an appreciation for humanity, and, with increased exposure, learn that differences equate with normalcy.

About My Reflection Matters in Art 2018 Spring/Summer Classes:

MRM founder, Chemay Morales-James, a proud unschooler & life-long educator, knows children learn best through real world, hands-on, playful experiences that connect to their passions, interests, and cultural identities.  This is what MRM in Art offers to local home/unschoolers or anyone interested in our programming. All four of MRM’s 2018 spring/summer art classes will be taught in both English & Spanish to support dual language development! Our full prices are listed below; however, we do offer a reduced price option for families on a tight budget. Visit our website to learn more about our classes, artists & FB group under the tab, MRM in CT Home Education.

Block printing is an ancient, artistic practice that has roots in Asia and Africa. It is traditionally done with carved wood blocks; however, in this class, students will learn the basics of carving using linoleum blocks (Linolium tiles are softer than wood making it easier for novice carvers.). They will practice printing on paper & fabric while touching upon the design elements of pattern & repetition. Students will leave this class with stronger carving skills and a block print they can use over and over on paper, fabric, or whatever material they choose!
